One thing that helped improve my painting was switching to a wet pallet, and I’ll show you how to make one at home in 5 minutes.

What you’ll need:

  • A tupperware box
  • Two sheets of kitchen roll
  • Baking paper
  • Water

Start off by pouring a small amount of water into the tupperware box. You only need enough so that it covers the bottom.

Next, you want to take your sheets of kitchen roll and fold them in half. Place both sheets so that they cover the bottom of the tub and soak up the water.

At this point, it’s a good idea to pour away any excess water. You only need enough so that the kitchen roll stays damp.

Finally, take your baking paper and place it over the tub. Then starting from the middle, push the paper down so that it covers the bottom of the tub. You’ll want to leave some paper covering the sides to prevent any water making it’s way onto your pallet and mixing with your paints.

And there you have it, one wet pallet in under 5 minutes!

So why use one? Well, there’s a few good reasons. The main one being that it makes your paints last longer. A lot longer. I always found that the paint I mixed ready to use had dried out within a few minutes. No matter how much I thinned it, or what I mixed it on, I always had to get more ready. Because of the nature of the wet pallet, it helps keep your paints from drying out. The baking paper (or parchment paper if you have any of that) allows a very small amount of moisture through to help keep your paint wet.

The other reason why it’s great to use a wet pallet is because it helps with consistency. You’ll be able to mix a perfect batch of paint without worrying about it drying out and mixing more. That means you should get more coverage out of it, making your paint job more consistent. Not only that, but say you mixed some colours together to make that perfect blend or highlight. Then went back the next day to carry on and found it had dried out, you’d have to try and create that mix again. A wet pallet can keep your paint wet for days, even weeks.

So those are my two main reasons for using a wet pallet. You’ll probably find that being able to make a good mix of paint that doesn’t dry out straight away, will also mean it goes on smoother and give you a better finish. So why not give it a try, you’ll probably be surprised that something like this can make a big difference to your painting!

A few good things to remember.

  • Only use a small amount of water.
  • Use baking paper, or parchment paper. Greaseproof paper doesn’t work.
  • Keep you pallet fresh. It’s good to make a new one now and again. Mould can form inside the tub after a while. If it does, just wash it out and start again.
